Stay Safe on Social Networking Sites

As social networking websites are becoming a part of our daily life, it is important to protect yourself against hackers, identity theft, and other malicious activities.

Here’s what you can do to better protect yourself:

  • Use your personal bookmark or type the address of your social networking site directly into your browser. Be cautious when you click on any link in an email or on an unfamiliar website. You might be directed to a fake login page where your personal information could be recorded and use for illegal purposes.
  • Be selective about friend request or file sharing on a social network. Identity thieves may create fake profiles or send a malicious program in order to get information from you.
  • Be aware of posting private information on social websites. It might give away hints like house address to criminals.

Do What’s Right Online

Social media is a great way for sharing ideas, fostering bonds and enjoying collaboration. However, irresponsible social media conduct could negatively impact your education or career, face criminal prosecution and even hurt others in the process. Hurtful speech, threats and insults online can have serious consequences. Be responsible on social media, do what’s right online to avoid regretting later.

Personal Data Backup

It is important to backup copies of your PCs, notebooks and other smart devices data regularly to prevent the loss of work or important information such as assignments, lecture notes, and project documents.

You may copy your data files to external storage devices such as a USB hard disk or thumb drive.  You may also upload the copies to online/cloud storage for easier and more convenient access.
