A cybersecurity software company, Check Point has discovered a malware called “Gooligan” which infects Android devices to access user’s information and data on Google apps such as Gmail, Drive, and Photos. The malware will steal the device’s owner email address and login information once it installs itself onto the Android device.

You may check if your account has been breached by entering your email address associated with your Android devices at the Gooligan Checker website HERE.

Ransomware is a type of malware that restricts access to the infected computer and victims have to pay a ransom before the restriction is removed.

Ransomware renders the computer unusable by:

  • Locking the computer and displaying messages intended to coax the victim into paying.
  • Preventing the victim from using his computer or programs.
  • Hiding the victim’s data.
  • Encrypting the victim’s data.

Users can protect themselves against ransomware with the following good security habits:

  • Employ a data backup and recovery plan for all critical information. Backup data should be kept on a separate device and stored offline.
  • Do not click on unsolicited links in emails or open email attachments from unknown, untrusted or impersonated sender.

Ransomware victim SHOULD NOT make any ransom payment due to the reasons stated below:

  • Paying ransom will inevitably fund additional criminal activities to develop more advanced versions of ransomware.
  • There is no guarantee that the encrypted files can be recovered even after paying the ransom. Some ransomware cases may actually be scams, where the hacker has no intention to decrypt the files after payment is made.
  • There is no assurance that you will not be infected again and the next ransom may be higher.
