Hackers are using Facebook Messenger to distribute malware by sending image files to users. The malicious attacker will first embed malware in an image and send it through Facebook Messenger to unsuspecting users. The ransomware will activate itself when the user try to access the downloaded image. The user's computer will then be locked from any access until the ransom is paid.
As a precaution, it is best not to open any unknown image files sent by your Facebook friends or any Facebook users, especially image with unusual extensions like .SVG, .JS, .HTA, etc.
