While private companies in Singapore are subjected to the Personal Data Protection Act, Government Agencies are subjected to the Data Protection Principles in the Instruction Manual 8 (in the government intranet). In this issue, we highlight the considerations when USING personal data.
It is important to note that personal data, such as NRIC, Mobile numbers, Personal eMail addresses, obtained from students in the course of their study, should not be retained and used for other unrelated purposes.
If departments wish to maintain an on-going relationship with the staff or student after their graduation, then it would be necessary to indicate clearly at the point of data collection or on the form that, for example, "the personal data collected may be retained for subsequent contact with the individual on NP related events".
Staff and students should also be given the option to opt out of having their personal information used for other purposes.
If schools/departments wish to use the personal data collected to serve a different purpose, then explicit consent should be sought from the individuals. The consent collected should be properly filed for future reference as individuals may enquire at a later date.

The 7000 hotline will cease from 10 Nov 2014. Please contact Support at 8111.
With effect from 19 Nov 2014, the NPNet account will be locked after 5 unsuccessful log-in attempts. This is to prevent any automated brute force attacks.
To prevent accidental lockout of your NPNet account, please take note of the following:
On 29 Oct 2014, there was a reported vulnerability for Samsung's Find My Mobile app.
If you happen to be the owner of a Samsung smartphone and have been using Find My Mobile, please turn it off.
Go to Settings > Security > Find My Mobile > Disable Remote Controls
If you haven't registered for a Samsung account, chances are that this service is not turned on and you're safe.
If you haven't signed up for an account, but you've tapped the launcher for Galaxy Apps, then Find My Mobile is most likely on your device.
